Sutter County Sheriff’s Department Safety Day

On April 24, 2008, a political advertisement ran in the Appeal Democrat advertizing the
Sutter County Sheriff’s Department was holding a Safety Event and in the bottom half of
the advertisement was notice, with picture, to come meet a local candidate currently
running for County Supervisor. This office quickly received complaints from citizens
advising that the advertisement appeared to be an official endorsement of the Sutter
County Sheriff’s Department for a political candidate which would be a violation law.
I agree that the way this ad was laid out could be confused an endorsement.
Neither I nor this office had received any prior notice whatsoever and was unaware that
this advertisement was going to run. Nor was I or this office aware of its content prior
to its publication. The Sutter County Sheriff’s Department is neutral on political issues
as a matter of law.
That said, on April 26, 2008, from 10am to 4pm, the Sutter County Sheriff’s Department will
be holding its 4th Annual recognition event for National Crime Victim’s Rights Week.
This annual event is held every year in April at Happy Park (Pebble Beach Drive west of
Walton Ave.) and is conducted by the Sheriff’s Department to hear directly from the community
on their concerns and to promote National Crime Victim’s Rights Week. Reference material
relating to domestic violence, gang awareness, burglary prevention and the Farm ID
program will be distributed.
As in past years, Sysco Foods and the Deputy Sheriff’s Association will be donating food
and drinks and the Kiwanis Club will cook for the event. Any other expenses are paid for
personally by the Deputies themselves or with private donations.
This year, Casa De Esperanza, Sutter County Adult and Child Protective Services,
Victim-Witness, the Trauma Intervention Team (TIP), the American Red Cross, Rideout Hospital,
Bi-County Ambulance and Yuba City Fire Department will all participate. The Sheriff’s
Department K-9 Team, Boat Patrol, Red-e-Fox 911 and others will be there.
As always, everyone in the community is welcome to participate in this event.
