FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Wednesday March 7, 2007 5:49pm

SUBJECT:

In Custody Death at Jail

TEXT:

The Sutter County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the death of an inmate that occurred earlier this afternoon.

Anthony Evans CARPIO, age 28, of Yuba City was observed by jail staff to be in some unknown type of medical distress in a holding cell at approximately 1:15pm this afternoon. Jail medical staff was immediately called and they responded to find Carpios’ condition worsening and that it warranted immediate transportation to the hospital.  Bi-County ambulance and Yuba City fire/rescue were responded and Carpio was transported to Rideout hospital where he was later pronounced deceased.  There were several other inmates in the holding cell at the time and all were being interviewed by Sutter County Coroner investigators to determine the events leading up to this occurrence.

The California Department of Justice has been notified as required by law and an autopsy has been scheduled for tomorrow to determine a specific cause of death.

Carpio had been arrested and brought to the Sutter County Jail by Yuba City Police at approximately 4:40am this morning on a misdemeanor warrant charging possession of drug paraphernalia and failure to appear.
