Suspicious Circumstances-Possible
Scam Artists
TEXT:
Sutter County Sheriff’s Deputies
have received several complaints from members of the East Indian
Community, informing the Department of attempts to obtain personnel
banking and identification information over the telephone. The
victims received telephone calls in at least two instances where the
caller identified himself as being from the “Department of Homeland
Security”. The caller would then engage the victim in a
conversation over the use of the victim’s credit card to purchase
expensive airline tickets. The caller would then attempt to get
personal identification information and credit card information.
The victim was then asked to telephone a number the caller provided
for “Trans Union”, to provide personal information to confirm the
credit card account. The callers apparently, specifically targeted
several members of the East Indian community in this latest scam
attempt.
All county residents should be
warned not to provide personal or banking information over the
telephone as it could subject them to financial losses if the
information is used for criminal gain. Legitimate agencies and
investigators will not require information such as specific banking
information over the telephone.
