FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Wednesday, February 15, 2006, 07:30 am

 From:   Jim Denney, Sheriff-Coroner

 SUBJECT:

Officer involved shooting

 TEXT:

At approximately 1:48 am, Sutter County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a report of shots fired in the area of the 2300 block of Birch Street in Live Oak.  The reporting party started that he had heard approximately five shots that he believed were fired from a handgun.  No one was seen in the area.  Additional calls to dispatch indicating that more gunshots were heard in the area.  Callers were able to identify the residence where it was believed the shots were coming from as 2322 Birch Street, Live Oak.  The Sutter County Special Enforcement Detail (SWAT) was called out and responded to the area.  The SED team set up their perimeter and was awaiting attempts by hostage negotiators to make telephone contact with the individual.

At approximately 3:47 am, a male subject broke out a window to the residence from inside and began shooting at the deputies who returned fire.  The suspect was disabled and taken into custody.  Medical aid was provided and subsequently transported to Rideout Emergency Hospital in Marysville where he was pronounced dead on arrival.  At this time the identification of the deceased male has not been determined.

No deputies were injured during the incident.  The California Department of Justice, Bureau of Criminal Investigation was called and agreed to conduct the criminal investigation.  A representative from the Sutter County District Attorney’s Office is also assisting the Department of Justice Agents with the investigation.  Investigators from the Sutter County Sheriff’s Department are conducting a separate, administrative investigation into the shooting.
