FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Monday, October 03, 2005, 3 P.M. SUBJECT: Sutter County Sheriff's Detectives Investigate Check Cashing Scheme TEXT: Sutter County Sheriff's Detectives arrested 31 year old Yuba City women on charges of burglary, uttering a forged check, possession w/intent to pass a forged check, and possession of stolen property. The woman was identified as Racquel Torres, 31, of Yuba City. Approximately $4000 worth of forged checks have been recovered by the Sheriff's Department and it is believed that more checks may have been cashed. The payroll checks were written on a closed account belonging to Crinkle Donuts of Yuba City. The checks had been reported stolen by the business to the Yuba City Police Department on September 16, 2005. Those checks recovered by the Sheriff's Department were written for amounts ranging from $200 to $1800. Torres is suspected of going to numerous businesses in the Yuba-Sutter area in attempts to cash the forged checks. Anyone who has information regarding this case is asked to contact Detective Donna Myers at 530-822-7313. If merchants located in the City of Yuba City have received checks regarding this case they should report those to the Yuba City Police Department.
