MEDIA RELEASE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Monday,
December 15, 2003, 3 P.M.
SUBJECT:
Telephone
Scam Warning
TEXT:
Sutter
County Sheriff’s Deputies were contacted by a citizen who reported a
possible telephone scam that may be occurring in the local area. The
citizen reported that he received a telephone call from a female who
stated she was representing the CPI Corporation from Las Vegas,
Nevada. The female went on to say that the company was giving out
“gas vouchers”, for shopping at local grocery stores. The female then
requested the bank account number and bank branch belonging to the
citizen. The reason given for this information was to enable the
female to send out the vouchers by UPS, which would cost $1.98 to do
each household.
In this case the citizen understood
that if it sounds too good to be true, then it probably is not true,
and did not give any of the requested information. Local residents
are reminded that they should never give this type of information over
the telephone. It is a common means for fraudulent access to banking
information and may lead to identity theft as well as loss of your
banking assets before it is discovered.
