National Night Out August 7, 2001

On Tuesday, August 7, neighborhoods throughout The
City of Live Oak and Sutter County are being invited to join forces
with thousands of communities nationwide for the "18th Annual
National Night Out" (NNO) crime and drug prevention event.
National Night Out is sponsored by the National Association of Town
Watch (NATW) and co-sponsored locally by the Sutter County Sheriff's
Department. It will involve over 9,500 communities from all 50
states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities and military bases around
the world. In all, over 32 million people are expected to
participate in 'America's Night Out Against crime' on August 7. NNO
2001 is being supported in part by the U.S. Department of Justice,
Bureau of Justice Assistance and the Sutter County Sheriff's
Department.
National Night Out is designed to: 1) Heighten
crime and drug prevention awareness; (2) Generate support for and
participation in, local anticrime efforts; (3) Strengthen
neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and (4) Send
a message to criminals letting them know neighborhoods are organized
and fighting back.
From 7 to 10 PM on August 7th, residents in
neighborhoods throughout Live Oak and Sutter County and across the
nation are asked to lock their doors, turn on outside lights, and
spend the evening outside with neighbors and police. Many
neighborhoods throughout Live Oak and Sutter County will be hosting
a variety of special events such as, block parties, cookouts, visits
from police, youth activities, and anticrime rallies.
This year in Live Oak, awards will be given to
children (0-12) who create posters depicting one of the following
themes; 1) How to catch a bad guy, 2) How to watch out for a bad guy
or 3) What to do if a bad guy approaches you. Posters will be judged
on the following: Best overall drawing, Most Creative, Best use of
color.
Sheriff Jim Denney and his command staff, along
with the Sutter County K-9 unit, Boat Patrol, Bike Patrol and Live
Oak Fire Department will visit the neighborhoods participating in
National Night Out.
